Yuxi Normal University is a provincially administered, full-time undergraduate institution. Its origins trace back to 1978, when the Yuxi Teachers’ Training Program was established with approval from the Yunnan Provincial Government. In 1983, it was restructured into Yuxi Teachers’ College, and in 1992, with the endorsement of the former National Education Commission, it was renamed Yuxi Normal Junior College. In 2000, upon approval by the Ministry of Education, it was officially upgraded to Yuxi Normal University. By 2024, it earned recognition as a master’s degree-granting institution. The university has achieved significant milestones in educational evaluation and development. In 2007, it passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching quality assessment. In 2017, it successfully completed the Ministry’s undergraduate teaching audit. In 2019, it was designated a model institution for applied undergraduate talent development in Yunnan Province. In 2021, it was selected as a pilot school for the Ministry of Education’s new round of undergraduate education and teaching audits. In 2024, it was approved as one of the first pilot units for the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s Specialized Cybersecurity Industry-Education Integration Innovation Center. Additionally, it was recognized as a National Language Promotion Base, included among Yunnan Province’s pilot universities for comprehensive sports education reform, named a demonstration school for fostering a shared sense of the Chinese national community, and designated a training base for primary and secondary education teachers in Yunnan Province.

Yuxi Normal University is located in the renowned central Yunnan city of Yuxi, known as the "Highland Water Town" and ranked among China’s "Top Ten Livable Ecological Cities." As the hometown of Nie Er, a celebrated Chinese musician, Yuxi is the closest regional institution to the provincial capital, Kunming. The university spans an area of 1014.45 mu (approximately 167 acres) and comprises 13 administrative bodies, 18 academic and research units, 16 service and support departments, 6 additional organizations, and 1 supervisory office appointed by the Yunnan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection. It currently enrolls 14,553 full-time students and employs 925 faculty and staff members.

Guided by its motto, "Pursue Truth and Virtue, Achieve Beauty and Utility," the university is deeply rooted in central Yunnan and the city of Yuxi, serving the broader Yunnan Province while extending its influence to Southeast Asia. Over the years, it has trained nearly 80,000 qualified graduates, primarily for local basic education and socio-economic development in Yuxi and surrounding areas, making significant contributions to regional education and the progress of central Yunnan. The university has earned numerous accolades, including designations as a "National Civilized Unit," "National Advanced Unit for School Art Education," "National Advanced Unit for Aesthetic Education in Higher Education," and "Outstanding Unit for the National College and University Student Volunteer Summer Social Practice Program in Culture, Science, and Health." It has also been recognized as an "Advanced Unit for Graduate Employment and Entrepreneurship in Yunnan Province," "Yunnan Provincial Center for Practical Education and Innovation," "Yunnan Water-Saving University," "Yunnan Demonstration School for Socialist Core Values Education," "Yunnan Education System Grassroots ‘Five Excellences’ Working Committee," "Outstanding Organizer of the 7th Yunnan University Student Art Exhibition," "Yunnan Science Popularization Base," and "Provincial Non-material Cultural Heritage Protection and Inheritance Base."

Yuxi Normal University is committed to discipline-driven development, establishing a dynamic academic framework that positions education as its cornerstone, foundational disciplines as its backbone, and applied disciplines as its focal point. This system is characterized by distinct strengths, notable advantages, and the coordinated growth of multiple disciplines. Currently, the university boasts 3 master’s degree authorization programs, 1 provincial first-class discipline under the "Category B Plateau Discipline" designation, 1 discipline included in the provincial "New Discipline Development Plan" for first-class construction, 5 provincial key disciplines, and 7 provincially approved master’s degree authorization programs under development.

The university is home to an array of advanced research and teaching facilities, including 1 provincial key laboratory, 2 provincial academician and expert workstations, 1 provincial field observation and research station, 9 key laboratories for higher education institutions, and 4 provincial engineering research centers for universities. It also features 1 provincial experimental zone for innovative talent cultivation models, 4 provincial exemplary experimental teaching centers, 1 provincial pilot for comprehensive law education reform, 2 provincial bases for experimental training and technical innovation services, 4 provincial master teacher studios, 5 provincial teaching teams, 2 provincial philosophy and social sciences innovation teams, and 9 provincial university science and technology innovation teams. Additionally, the university hosts 15 specialized research institutes, including the Nie Er and National Anthem Research Institute, the Paleontology Research Center, the Yuxi Socio-Economic Development Research Center, the Central Yunnan Culture Research and Preservation Center, the Pollution Control and Ecological Restoration Research Center, and the Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization Research Center. These institutions underscore the university’s commitment to academic excellence and regional impact.

Yuxi Normal University upholds the principle of fostering virtue through education, dedicated to nurturing socialist builders and successors who embody a deep sense of national pride, professional expertise, innovative spirit, practical skills, and holistic development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education. The university offers 50 full-time undergraduate programs, with 43 actively admitting students. Among these, it boasts 1 nationally recognized signature program, 1 key construction program designated by Yunnan Province’s higher education institutions, 3 provincially recognized distinctive programs, 13 provincial "first-class programs," 1 provincial "emerging program," and 1 provincial pilot program aligned with industry service needs. Additionally, the university provides 9 provincial-level exemplary courses, 21 provincial first-class courses, 1 provincial bilingual teaching demonstration course, and 6 provincial demonstration courses integrating ideological and political education. In 2023, the university achieved notable success in educational outcomes, securing 1 first-place and 4 second-place awards in the Yunnan Provincial Teaching Achievement Awards. Eleven programs—Fine Arts, Physical Education, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Geography, Physics, Chinese Language and Literature, English, Preschool Education, Chemistry, Ideological and Political Education, and Primary Education—have passed the Ministry of Education’s Level II certification for teacher education programs.

In recent years, students have excelled in national competitions, earning 99 awards in events such as the China College Students’ Innovation Competition, the "Challenge Cup" National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, and the "Challenge Cup" China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Plan Competition, reflecting the university’s emphasis on innovation and practical achievement.

Yuxi Normal University adheres to a "talent-driven" strategy, focusing on both recruitment and development to excel in attracting, nurturing, and utilizing talent, with the aim of building a high-caliber faculty team. Among its full-time teaching staff, there are 89 professors at the senior level and 220 at the associate senior level, alongside 240 PhD holders and 384 master’s degree holders. The university is home to 1 recipient of a special government allowance, 36 individuals supported by the Yunnan Province "Yunan-boosting Talent Support Program," 13 recognized under Yunnan’s "Two Categories of Talent" initiative, and 8 provincial-level distinguished teachers. Additionally, 81 faculty members have been selected for the Yuxi City "Yuxi-boosting Talent Support Program," 26 have been named young and middle-aged disciplinary and technical leaders in Yuxi City, and 2 have been honored as outstanding professional and technical talents with significant contributions in Yuxi City.

Yuxi Normal University is committed to an "academics-first" approach, strengthening its research capabilities to enhance the synergy between research and teaching. In recent years, the university has undertaken 947 research projects domestically and internationally, including 18 projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, 46 by the National Natural Science Fund, 261 at the provincial or ministerial level, 451 at the prefectural or departmental level, 170 collaborative projects, and 1 international cooperation project. Faculty members have published 216 academic monographs and textbooks, as well as 2,193 scholarly papers, with 317 appearing in core journals and 489 indexed by SCI, SSCI, EI, CPCI, and other prestigious databases. Over 100 academic research achievements have received awards from provincial and municipal authorities, and faculty have secured 173 patent authorizations. The university library houses an extensive collection, including over 1.168 million physical books, approximately 900,000 e-books, more than 180,000 e-journals, and 23 diverse databases, achieving full coverage of its existing print periodicals. The university also publishes two publicly available periodicals: the Journal of Yuxi Normal University and the Yuxi Normal University Newspaper.

Yuxi Normal University embraces an open approach to education, actively integrating into and serving the socio-economic development of the region. In recent years, the university has forged numerous strategic partnerships. These include collaborating with the Standing Committee of the Yuxi Municipal People’s Congress to establish the Yuxi Local Legislative Research, Evaluation, and Consulting Service Base; partnering with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and the Yuxi National High-Tech Industrial Development Zone to create the Yuxi Internet University; and working with the Yuxi Tourism Development Commission to launch the Yuxi Cultural and Creative College. The university has also teamed up with Xinhua Network to establish the Maker Academy and collaborated with Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the Nie Er Art Research Center, and Yunnan Arts University to jointly develop the Nie Er Art Research Center, a graduate internship base for Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a creative fieldwork base for faculty and students, and a graduate internship base for music education at Yunnan Arts University. Further collaborations include partnering with the Yuxi Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision to establish the Yuxi Discipline Inspection and Supervision College; working with the Yuxi Civil Affairs Bureau to create the Yuxi New Era Community Worker Training School; and founding the Yuxi Normal University Innovation and Entrepreneurship College. The university has also joined forces with Yunnan Yuxi Qianxin Technology Co., Ltd. to establish the Cyberspace Security College, with the Yunnan Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to build an Astronomy Science Education Center, and with the Yuxi Municipal Government and Yuxi Industrial Finance and Trade School to set up the Yuxi Normal University Higher Vocational and Technical College. Additionally, it has collaborated with the Yuxi Municipal Party Committee Promoting Department and the Yuxi Education and Sports Bureau to create the Nie Er and National Anthem Patriotic Education Base.

Other notable initiatives include establishing the Yuxi Normal University Affiliated First Kindergarten and research bases for Yunnan’s preschool education master’s program and Yunnan Normal University’s affiliated kindergarten teaching practice, in partnership with Yunnan Normal University Basic Education Group and Yuxi Guanghua Kindergarten Co., Ltd.; working with the Yuxi Judicial Bureau to establish the Party School of the Yuxi Lawyers’ Industry Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Yuxi Lawyers’ College; partnering with the Yuxi Sports School to create the Yuxi Normal University Higher Vocational Sports College; and collaborating with the Tonghai County Government to launch the Qilu Lake Development Research Center. The university has also set up the Yunnan Folk Music Training Lab, partnered with Beijing Guanghui Jintong Education Technology Co., Ltd. to build a flight attendant training simulation cabin, and worked with Yuxi City’s Hongta District to establish the Yuxi Normal University Affiliated Primary School.

Beyond these, the university has collaborated with the Kunming Guandu District Committee to create a social work talent training base, with the Yuxi Municipal Bureau of Confidentiality to establish the Yuxi Confidentiality Education Training Platform and Yuxi Information Innovation Application Center, and with Huawei Cloud Computing Technology Co., Ltd. to launch the Yuxi Digital Information Industry College. It has also partnered with Yunnan University’s Logistics Service Group to establish a teaching and research practice base for Gu Haijie, a provincial distinguished teacher under the Yunnan Xingdian Talent Support Program, and worked with the Yuxi Municipal Party Committee Promoting Department and Yuxi Education and Sports Bureau to create the Yuxi Integrated Innovation Center for Ideological and Political Education Across Primary, Secondary, and Higher Education. Finally, in collaboration with the Yuxi Investigation Team of the National Bureau of Statistics, it has established an internship base for applied statistics.

The university upholds the principle of international cooperation, actively integrating into the national "Belt and Road" initiative and contributing to the development of Yunnan Province as a regional center connecting South and Southeast Asia. It also supports the social development of Yuxi and the establishment of international friendship cities. The university is committed to fostering internationalized, application-oriented talent to serve regional development by leveraging both domestic and international educational resources.

The university has established long-term, stable cooperative relationships with institutions in South and Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Malaysia, while expanding partnerships with universities in Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Belarus. These collaborations encompass a variety of initiatives, such as joint training programs, faculty and student exchanges, research cooperation, and artistic and cultural exchanges. It continues to strengthen programs like the "2+2" Thai language dual-degree initiative, the "2+2+1" Myanmar language joint training program, and paid international internship opportunities, while advancing master’s degree pathways and overseas education projects with high-caliber foreign institutions.

Currently, the university maintains 32 overseas internship bases and 3 international Chinese language and culture centers. It is also among the first designated Chinese Language Education Bases in Yunnan Province and serves as an official testing center for the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK).

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the university will adhere to the educational strategy of being rooted in central Yunnan, serving Yuxi and Yunnan, and extending its influence to Southeast Asia. The focus will be on accelerating the high-quality development of the university through a connotation-driven approach. The university will prioritize becoming a master's degree-granting institution and constructing a high-level applied university in Yunnan, aiming to build itself into a first-class local application-oriented university. The core mission will be talent-driven development, with the establishment of high-quality undergraduate programs and an emphasis on technological innovation to serve local economic and social development. Strengthening grassroots party organizations will serve as a safeguard for progress. The university will aim for comprehensive, high-quality development, making significant contributions to regional basic education and the economic and social growth of central Yunnan. By 2035, the university aspires to become a distinctive, first-class local application-oriented university, marked by unique strengths and characteristics.
